The MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering qualification provides the competencies required by a higher Engineering Tradesperson carrying out a wide range of engineering work undertaken in the fields of refrigeration and air conditioning, casting and moulding, computer numerically controlled (CNC) programming, fluid power, heavy fabrication, instrumentation, maintenance, plant mechanics, marine electronics, mechatronics, patternmaking, robotics, toolmaking, welding and watch and clock services and repair as well as post trade work.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. However, in some jurisdictions units in this qualification may relate to licensing or regulatory requirements.
This qualification can be accessed as Direct Entry. While there is no qualification entry requirement, it is assumed that the learner is either already a tradesperson with access to structured on and off-the-job training or is an apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement.

All learners will undertake an initial skills assessment to determine suitability for the course
and student needs. This is a physically demanding course requiring working with power tools,
long hours standing and bending, manual handling and carrying various equipment.
It is important that students confirm their physical health and fitness and advise SIT of any
respiratory illnesses and other physical ailments that may negatively impact their ability to
complete the qualification.
Determination of course suitability and additional support (if any) will be made by a qualified
assessor.

Practical training conducted at SIT Workshops
All structured activities are scheduled for 20 hours per week. Participants will complete
theoretical training in the SIT Campus classrooms, Practical training will be conducted in
purpose-built workshops (with operational workplace environment), followed by work placement
which will allow students to learn and demonstrate performance evidence in a functioning
workspace.
SIT will use a range of techniques during face-to-face delivery including trainer presentations
and demonstrations, individual tasks, case studies, research, role plays, practical
demonstrations, and group work.
All students directly enrolling in this course will undertake 440 hours of work placement over
22 weeks at 20 hours per week. The units of competency have specific hours of Work Based
Training allocated to them. Work Based Training (WBT) will be scheduled after the students have
had the theory and practical training sessions for the units of competency. This is reflected in
the course timetable in the last 2 study periods.
Work placement is organised by SIT; however, students will have the option to complete a
placement at their own workplace or look for other placement options. All external host
employers will need to be approved by SIT and a work placement agreement will be signed by SIT
and Host employer before commencement.
Students will be required to complete a list of additional self-study activities in their own time to complement the formal learning they are doing as part of their studies. These activities will involve students working on their own with limited direction from their trainer and will be for activities such as watching prescribed videos, research and answering questions; practical activities; research and report on topics provided; review of assessment requirements, & self-reflection. These learning activities form a formal part of the training and are mandatory.
Students will have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications. SIT will provide its students personal safety equipment PPEs for their use in the workshop during training (Steel Capped Boots, Welding gloves, Masks and Overalls). The cost of these will be mentioned as part of the Material cost at the time of Enrolment. Students can bring their own personal safety equipment PPEs.

Prior to enrolment SIT will determine any prior learning of each student with regard to their existing skills, knowledge and experience that the student may have acquired through formal (credit transfer), non-formal and informal learning related to Units of Competency in this qualification, in order to determine the amount of training SIT will provide to each student. Prior to course commencement, enrolled students will be required to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment designed for Cert IV level, so that SIT can determine whether students need LLN support during their studies.

SIT meets the requirements of the Student Identifier scheme. SIT will not issue AQF certification documentation to a student without being in receipt of a verified Student Identifier for that student, unless an exemption applies under the Student Identifiers Act 2014.
SIT offers a range of Student Support Services to help the overseas students in adjusting to study and life in Australia. Students will be provided with an age and culturally appropriate Orientation Program which will provide them with information about the services available to ease their transition into life and study in Australia and to assist them as needed. This provision of support services to students is as an integral part of training services provided by SIT. These support services will be provided at no additional cost to the student.
Students are required to maintain satisfactory course progress. SIT will monitor the course progress to ensure that students are able to complete their course within the expected duration specified in the CoE. Students may be able to temporarily defer the commencement of their studies or suspend their enrolment after commencement on the grounds of compassionate or compelling circumstances.
SIT may suspend or cancel a student enrolment including but not limited to, breach of Enrolment Agreement and visa conditions.
SIT will inform the student in writing about the intention to suspend or cancel the student enrolment and the reason for doing so. The student will be given a notice of intention to report and 20 working days to access SIT’s internal complaints and appeals process.

SIT will issue AQF [Australian Qualifications Framework] certification documentation only to a student whom it has assessed as meeting the requirements of the training product as specified in the relevant training package. AQF certification documentation will be issued within 30 calendar days of course completion, provided all agreed fees the student owes to SIT have been paid.
